F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions about EYP:

What is the difference between a National Session, an International Forum and an International Session?

There are about 100 EYP Sessions every year in many different countries. Detailed information about each session can be found on www.eyp.org.

The biggest EYP Sessions are the International Sessions. Three times a year (spring, summer and autumn) around 300 participants (delegates more than 35 different countries involved in EYP) enjoy these sessions which last 10 days.

An International Forum hosts 120-220 EYPers and lasts 5-9 days.

A National Session (=National Selection Conference) is organised by each country and vary in duration and number of participants from country to country. Among other purposes, most countries organise National Sessions to select delegates who will represent their country at an International Session or Forum.

The EYP Austria organises a National Sessions once a year which lasts 3-4 days and brings together 120 to 160 participants.

Can I stay involved in EYP even if I haven’t been selected?

Yes, of course! Just keep applying for sessions and don’t give up if it doesn’t work out the first time! You might first apply as a delegate or journo to get some experience to increase your chances of being selected for other positions.

Not having been selected does NOT mean, that you are not allowed to go to International Session. For most International Sessions EYP Austria has a few wild cards which members can apply for in order to go to an International Session even if they weren’t selected. The board sends out a call to the EYP Austria mailing list and afterwards selects the applicants for the wild cards.

If you would like to have more information on this simply contact our International Coordinator Christiane Kraus.

You might also visit some other EYP Austria events, like our Jour Fixes or socialising events.

What‘s a Jour Fixe?

A Jour Fixe is a regular EYP Austria meeting, where we discuss past and future events and present and collect ideas on how to improve EYP Austria.

Jours Fixes are traditionally followed by a socialising activity after the official agenda.

These meetings are also a great opportunity for people who are not yet involved in EYP to get an idea of EYP (Austria)

Everyone is welcome!

My English/French is not very good, is this a problem?

Not at all. EYP is not a language competition. Having an opinion on your topic and being able to express it is of greater importance.

You are only required to speak English.

I‘m not Austrian by nationality. Can I still represent Austria at an International Session?

Yes. At an International Session you are representing yourself, rather than a country.

Where do I get information about EYP Sessions from?

There is the homepage of the international EYP which has a calendar of all upcoming sessions and lots of other interesting information for you: www.eyp.org

For each EYP session there are calls for officials/delegates which are sent out to the mailing list of EYP Austria. Furthermore, important information about the EYP and EYP Austria’s events are communicated via email to the mailing list. In order to be part of the mailing list you have to be an offical member of EYP Austria.

Once in the list you will get the calls for all upcoming EYP events which include detailed information about the corresponding EYP session.

How can I become an official member of EYP Austria?

Membership is reserved for those who pay the annual membership fee of 20€. The money from the membership fees is used to cover administrative costs of EYP Austria (training materials, lease rental charges, office costs, homepage hosting, …).

Since we don‘t want to exclude anyone due to socio-economic issues, in certain cases people can ask to be freed from this fee. (please send an email to maria-anna.grasl@eypaustria.org)

To pay the membership fee simply transfer 20€ to the bank account of EYP Austria.

What are the costs for participating in EYP?

There is the annual membership fee of 20€ for becoming a member of EYP Austria.

Further participation fees differ from session to session and also vary for the different positions. For International Sessions delegates have to pay a participation fee of 150€. While there is usually a participation fee for delegates, most sessions do not charge any participation fees for officials. Travel costs are to be covered by the participants themselves, however, a few sessions also offer travel reimbursement. The actual costs for attending a session are stated in the call of the corresponding session.

But don’t worry! There is always the possibility to ask your school, local politicians, governments, institutions and organizations for sponsorship. If you have any questions or need any documents (e.g. official invitation) feel free to contact Georg Krenn.

How can I become an official at an EYP Session?

Officials are: Chairs, Journalists, Organisers, Jury

@ National Session or Forum: you need to apply!

If you are on the EYP Austria mailing list you constantly get calls for official for various sessions.

@ International Session: Firstly, you need a recommendation to be selected as an official at an International Session. Secondly, wait for a call and then apply.

How do I get a recommendation?

There are two ways to get a recommendation.

1.  As a Delegate at an International Session you get an official feedback from your Chair which MIGHT include a (potential) recommendation to go on as an official at future International Sessions. If you get a potential recommendation, this means that you need more time, experience, etc. before becoming an official at an IS (e.g. chairing at a NSC). If you perform as suggested your potential recommendation will be treated like a normal recommendation.

2.  As an official at a National Session you might get a recommendation from the session president.

Recommendations are submitted to the EYP database at the International Office in Berlin up to 5 weeks after a session, where selection panels can see them.
